WAM

Weapons & Ammunition Management

On this page

WAM is a set of processes and activities aimed at enhancing both the governance, accountability and oversight of all types of weapons and ammunition (including but not limited to small arms and light weapons), from their design and development to destruction (see IDDRS module 4.11 on TWAM).

bicc's work in the field of weapons and ammunition management follows a through-life approach to WAM and primarily focuses on activities that aim to counter the risk of diversion of weapons and ammunition, lower the risk of unintended explosions from inadequately stored ammunition and explosive stockpiles, and support peace building through enhanced community level safety initiatives.

bicc's activities aim at all points of the lifecycle, including design and manufacture,  transfer, storage, (end-)use, and destruction, of weapons, ammunition and explosives.

bicc has clustered its work in the following thematic areas:

-          Frameworks

-          Marking and recordkeeping

-          Identification and tracing

-          PSSM

In designing WAM interventions bicc engages at the local, national, regional and international levels, engaging policy makers, technical practitioners and relevant civil society organisations. In doing so, bicc aims to support the development of sustainable WAM frameworks, as well as provide technical solutions required for their implementation.
